Description
A round end grain board is harder to build than a rectangular one. Every wedge has to land true. The grain has to read as one piece, not a patchwork.
The Compass Series is that work. This board is 15.5 inches across, cut from black walnut, assembled in wedges so the end grain runs clean from centre to edge. Mineral oil and beeswax finish. No shortcuts.
Round boards serve differently than rectangular ones. They sit at the centre of the table. They rotate. They change the way people prep and the way people serve. This one sits well with either.
At 1.75 inches thick in walnut end grain, the Compass is also a round end grain butcher block — rare in the category. Most butcher blocks are rectangular because the rectangle is easier to glue up. The round form adds work and takes skill. The result is a butcher block that functions as a serving board, a centerpiece, and a lifetime prep surface in the same piece.
At 1.75″ thick, this is an end grain butcher block – built to sit on the counter and take real prep.
