Description
The Boreal Series is the architectural form — square-sided, thick, end grain pulled vertical to meet the knife. This is the Relief Edition: a walnut end grain board with a custom dual bull’s head set into the surface in zebrawood inlay, mirrored across the prep face.
First, the build. I glue every walnut end grain board from vertical hardwood strips, then route the dual bull’s head pattern and inlay the zebrawood flush with the walnut surface. Because end grain construction stands the wood fibre up to meet the blade, the surface absorbs the cut rather than resisting it. As a result, the board self-heals as the years pass and the knife edge stays sharper for longer. The finished block stands on solid brass feet, lifting it off the counter for airflow and a dry base.
What makes this walnut end grain board different
This is the heaviest piece in the Boreal line at nineteen by twelve and an inch and three-quarters thick. Meanwhile, the zebrawood inlay carries banded golden-to-dark grain that plays off the walnut depth — two species, one face. Most importantly, the dual bull’s head was drawn specifically for this board. The CNC pattern can be cut again, but the figure of this particular walnut blank cannot.
How to use one
This is a working butcher block first, a showpiece second. So when the meat comes off the grill, the Boreal sits where you set it and takes the carve. Either way, the inlay reads from across the kitchen. Afterwards, mineral oil and beeswax restore the surface in a few minutes.
Care, custom work, and shipping
First, wash with warm soapy water and dry flat. Second, never let the board soak. Finally, condition with butcher block oil monthly for the first season, then every quarter. Other inlay patterns cut on request: family brands, monograms, custom artwork. Ships from Virden, Manitoba via Canada Post with tracking, typically arriving in 1–2 weeks across Canada and 2–3 weeks to the US.

I received this cutting board as a gift. WOW!!! The attention to detail from this manufacturer shows vs some of my other wood block cut charcuterie boards. The inlay is perfect! As is the finished edge of the black walnut. Came with a food grade sealed finish. This has instantly become a treasured gift!
