The Hearth Cabin is the compact edge grain board — twelve inches by ten, three-quarters of an inch thick. The size that lives next to the stove and earns its place on the daily prep zone without taking over the counter.

First, the choice of wood. I build every Cabin compact edge grain board from a single species: solid walnut, cherry, or maple. Because each one is cut from one wood, the figure reads as one continuous piece across the prep face. As a result, the board ages evenly rather than splitting between species over time.

What makes a compact edge grain board different

Edge grain construction sits between basic flat-grain boards and the heavier end grain butcher block. Meanwhile, the Cabin is the entry point — light enough to grab one-handed for a sandwich at eleven at night, durable enough to take the daily prep work for years. Most importantly, the smaller footprint is what makes this board the one cooks actually reach for. A 12×10 is the board that gets used.

How to choose your wood

Walnut runs dark — chocolate tones, deep grain, quiet presence on the counter. So if the kitchen leans warm, walnut is the wood that holds the room. Cherry runs amber — warm honey out of the shop, deepening to bourbon over the years. Maple runs bright — clean, even, almost disappearing into the counter. Either way, all three are hand-finished with mineral oil and beeswax.

Care, custom work, and shipping

First, wash with warm soapy water and dry flat. Second, never let the board soak. Finally, condition with butcher block oil monthly for the first few months, then every quarter.
