Description
The Hearth Homestead is the edge grain cutting board the kitchen builds itself around — eighteen by twelve, an inch and a half thick, and weighty enough to sit where you set it down. Built in my Virden, Manitoba woodshop in your choice of walnut or cherry.
First, the build. I glue every Homestead edge grain cutting board from vertical-strip hardwood and run a juice groove around the prep face. Because edge grain runs the strong axis of the wood up to meet the knife, the board takes the blade with quiet weight rather than fighting it. As a result, the surface holds up to years of daily prep without scarring.
What makes an edge grain cutting board different
Edge grain sits between basic flat-grain boards and the heavier end grain butcher block. Meanwhile, it costs less and weighs less than end grain while staying gentle on a sharp edge. Most importantly, the long strips show the figure of the wood clearly — walnut runs from chocolate-dark to pale sapwood ribbons; cherry deepens from rose to honey as the years go by.
How to use one
Eighteen by twelve is the size the working kitchen actually needs. You can fit a whole roast, a full board of vegetables, the entire prep for a Sunday dinner without rotating the board sideways. So when guests are coming, the Homestead becomes the centre of the counter — and afterwards, the juice groove catches what would otherwise run onto the floor.
Care, custom work, and shipping
First, wash with warm soapy water and dry flat. Second, never let the board soak. Finally, condition with butcher block oil monthly for the first few months, then every quarter. Ships from Virden, Manitoba via Canada Post with tracking, typically arriving in 1–2 weeks across Canada and 2–3 weeks to the US.

The cutting board is absolutely beautiful and of great quality and I believe it is an excellent price. I WILL be purchasing from this gentleman again.

Thank you so much, Jimmy—I really appreciate the kind words. I’m glad you’re happy with the boards and that they found a good home. Enjoy them, and I’d be happy to build something for you again anytime.
